Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
1. What is Applications Academy’s philosophy?
Our philosophy is based upon a firm belief that
every child can succeed at school, given the proper encouragement, motivation
and tools. We believe that a tutor's most important job is to listen
and observe how students work and learn, and then provide each
student with strategies to work and learn more effectively. Our aim
is to reach underachieving students as early as possible and teach
them effective and lifelong learning strategies and problem solving
skills. This will begin a cycle of confidence, motivation, and
academic success that will stay with them for the rest of their
lives. We also aim to reach students whom have become bored or who
need a little inspiration. These students are typically receiving
high grades and just need a nudge or some out of school educational
stimulation.
2. What is tutoring?
Tutoring
is a process of learning, changing negative attitudes and growing
personally. When students are struggling educationally, it affects
all aspects of their lives. When this struggle is relieved, students
become happier, healthier individuals. Confidence, self esteem and
personal satisfaction grows dramatically. Because of this growth,
students become more willing to try new things. Through learning new
skills, filling in missing skills and learning from their mistakes,
students gain a comfortable confidence, personal discipline and a
more positive self-image. At Applications Academy Tutoring Center, we
strive to help students of all ages learn how to learn by helping
them gain courage to try, even when they may be wrong. This is vital
to the learning process. We assist students in learning many
strategies for studying, memory use, test taking, organizing school
work, and maintaining healthy attitudes about education.
3. What options are there for tutoring?
There
are several options for tutoring these days. There are after school
programs, teachers’ after class hours, big centers, online resources
and in home services. While each of these arenas has its’ own
inherent value, we have found that maintaining a smaller environment
is less stressful on students. It allows for a more personal
experience while maintaining privacy and comfort as well as a
‘serious’ and educational atmosphere, with little or no distractions.
Choosing the right tutor is equally as important. We strive for ‘good
matches’ for students and tutors to optimize comfort and ease of
trust. At Applications Academy, at no time is a student made to stay
with a tutor they are uncomfortable with. This would dramatically
hinder the learning process.
4. What is the process at Applications Academy
LLC?
Contact us over the phone or by email and let us know
what we can do for you. We will schedule a time with you for an
initial assessment. This includes an academic evaluation as well as a
brief personality and learning style profile, (for tutor matching),
and a willingness to try section. Within 2 working days (or 48
hours), we will schedule a review meeting for you if you want one. At
this meeting you will be able to look over the test results, receive
a written assessment report, talk about concerns, decide on a course
of action and ask questions. After this meeting, and with your input,
the assessment specialist and the tutor team will create a lesson
plan. If you prefer to
skip the meeting, we will review our notes with you at your students’
first tutoring session. Come
about 15 minutes early to your students first tutor hour if you would
like to review the lesson plan. After a few weeks (usually the 7th
session), a mini evaluation is done at the beginning of a tutoring
hour, lesson plans are adjusted accordingly. With any assessment
done, you have the option to receive a written or verbal report. Upon
completion of goals and lesson plans, students are awarded
certificates of completion.
